Hanging, Wall, Iron, Figure of young woman with cross, marked "Wells Rustless Iron Co., New York" "The Wells Process of Oxidizing Iron" There is a third inscription under the figure "Lorraine" (with the N backwards). I have found a bronze plague that may be the original of this without the Wells inscriptions but with "Lorraine" complete with the backward N
Another eBay listing describes a similar plaque (with Lorraine in a different position and with the correct N) and says that it is Marianne as Lorraine commemorating the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine by Germany in 1871. Marianne was a symbol of Republican France. Anyway, this was an interesting choice. Wells appears to have chosen to copy an existing plaque in cast iron and add his own information.
From Lyman Fletcher. Clear connection to William Wells.
