The Community House in Melbourne Village was built during World War II as a temporary building at the Naval Air Station, Banana River. In 1946 the American Homesteading Foundation purchased it at surplus and had it barged across the Indian River and then trucked to its present location in Melbourne Village. By 2000 it had deteriorated badly and was in danger of being demolished. A group of citizens, headed by Hester Wagner, persuaded the American Homesteading Foundation, Inc, and the Town of Melbourne Village to allow the building to be rehabbed. The work was completed under the direction of then Commissioner Mary Beasom. It is one of the very few buildings with a wooden floor suitable for dancing and is used every week by International, English, and Scottish dancers in addition to hosting many special weddings, showers, and parties.
